Midlife
Mothers
How old is too old to have a baby?
With
older women, the desire for a baby
is great. Their heart is in it, they
are socio-economically well off, and
their careers are in a better place
to take off plenty of time. The have
intention to love a child, the money
to do it and the time to devote to
it.
The
example set by more and more women
becoming pregnant for the first or
second time at age thirty-five, forty
five, or fifty is changing the attitude
about midlife pregnancy, but also
about age in general. The biological
clock is simply not what it used to
be. They might have been referred
to as elderly, geriatric or senescent
from the obstetrical point of view,
but they are now barely middle-aged.
Now age 35 is young, 40 is not middle
aged it is more like 60 for middle
aged.
How
old is too old to have a baby? It
was always thought that women of these
ages were set in their ways, sedentary
& just too old to reproduce. Women
who are getting pregnant later in
life are neither set in their ways
nor sedentary, at least not after
their babies are born. The truth is
known most of these women are flexible,
energetic and adapting to their new
role as a midlife parent with admirable,
resourcefulness. Frequently women
who choose to become pregnant in midlife
feel that midlife is the best time
to have a baby; they are more emotionally
mature, confident, & financially
stable than they were in their 20’s
& 30’s.
