Smoking
Cigarettes During Pregnancy
Women
who smoke cigarettes during pregnancy
run risks of premature births. Even
second hand tobacco smoke can cause
problems.
Smoking
and age are a bad combination that
can lead to a combination of abruption,
placenta previa, or preterm labor.
If you are over thirty five stop smoking
before getting pregnant. Many women
planning pregnancies do not realize
smoking can create serious problems
and even more problems if the mother
is over thirty- five. Smoking can
lead to premature births, low birth
weight, serious placental problems
and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
Even
if your partner or friends smoke,
secondhand smoke may also create problems
for your baby by contributing to a
reduction in placental blood flow
and a greater risk for premature or
low birth weight baby.
Smoking
produces carbon monoxide that enters
the baby’s bloodstream, binds
to its blood, and reduces the amount
of oxygen circulating through the
baby’s body. In addition smoking
reduces uterine blood flow. The result
is that the baby no longer receives
the necessary amounts of oxygen and
other nutrients, leading to low birth
weight and growth retardation.
If
you quit smoking during your first
trimester of pregnancy, your chances
of having a low birth weight baby
are significantly reduced. Reducing
the number of cigarettes per day lowers
some of your risks. It is best to
plan ahead and stop smoking before
getting pregnant.
